And the consequence was–many of them bled to death. So the medics used the spray, stopped the bleeding, and were able to get the wounded back to the base hospital. And many, many lives were saved,» Coover said.
«This was very powerful. That’s something I’m very proud of–the number of lives that were saved,» he said.
Como les dije anteriormente, en el torneo de Ultimate hice algo muy osado, pero impulsado por el deseo de ayudar a nuestro equipo. Ante la estupefacta mirada de Melina, y la curiosa observación de Nicole, El Pepi y yo utilizamos Coquí para pegarme de vuelta la piel que se había despegado a causa de una ampolla en el dedo gordo del pie. Los resultados inmediatos fueron excelentes. Jugué el último partido sin molestias ni dolor y luego de bañarme ya se había ido la pega.
Pero, ¿cuáles serían los efectos posteriores de esta acción? Tal y como les prometí a mis espectadores, he realizado una pequeña investigación acerca de este pegamento y estos son mis resultados.
El Coqui, al igual que el Krazy Glue y el Super Glue, es un pegamento a base de cianoacrilato (al cual me referiré, en lo sucesivo, por su término en inglés, cyanoacrylate). Los cyanoacrilates fueron inventados en el 1942 por el Dr. Harry Coover, de los Laboratorios Kodak, buscando una forma de crear miras sintéticas extra-claras para rifles en la II Guerra Mundial. Esta idea no tuvo éxito y fue dejada a un lado. Seis años más tarde, trataría de utilizar la sustancia como alternativa para los vidrios de las cabinas de los aviones. Esto tampoco tuvo éxito, pero sí descubrió que la sustancia pegaba materiales entre sí con gran fuerza y rapidez.
Se consideró su uso en la Medicina, y el cyanoacrylate fue enviado a la FDA (Food And Drug Administration) para ser estudiado. Mientras tanto, fue utilizado en Vietnam para cerrar heridas en el campo de batalla, con fenómenos resultados. Pero no fue aprobado por la FDA, ya que los primeros compuestos eran a base de methyl-2-cyanoacrylate, e irritaban la piel al reaccionar con el agua y liberar cyanoacetate y formaldehyde. Luego se inventó el butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, pero éste se partía por su fragilidad a los pocos días. 
Finalmente, la FDA aprobó el 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate (conocido comercialmente como Dermabond y Traumaseal), el cual es más flexible y resistente que el butyl-2-cyanoacrylate y carece de los efectos tóxicos del methyl-2-cyanoacrylate. Ya se ha utilizado con otros propósitos, como en Ortopedia, Odontología, Veterinaria, y hasta en la casa, con el Band Aid Liquid Bandage.
Conociendo ya el origen y las diferencias de estos polímeros, podemos intentar dar respuesta a nuesra pregunta inicial. ¿Qué tan saludable es utilizar cyanoacrylates de uso diario (como los pegamentos antes mencionados), para cerrar heridas en la piel?
En pocas palabras: no es recomendable hacerlo. Desde la aplicación, y por la reacción exotérmica que se produce con la polimerización, pueden producirse quemaduras en la piel, aunque esto sería más probable si es un área grande la que se ve afectada. Además, recordemos que la descomposición del methyl-2-cyanoacrylate produce formaldehyde, o methanal, el cual produce alteraciones proteicas en las células (recordemos que es la sustancia utilizada para embalsamar) y es convertido en ácido fórmico en el organismo, el cual, a grandes dosis, puede disminuir el pH sanguíneo, produciendo una acidosis metabólica, hipotermia, coma y la muerte. El formaldehyde está clasificado como un probable carcinógeno humano por el U.S. Environmental Protection Agency y como un carcinógeno humano conocido por el International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Estos efectos tan nocivos del formaldehyde se refieren más a la exposición al gas de forma crónica y en mayor escala, y como una enfermedad ocupacional, por lo que la exposición corta y a pequeñas dosis, como la que se obtiene al pegarse la sustancia en nuestra piel cuando utilizamos estos pegamentos, no deben ser de mayor consternamiento.
Aún así, decidí buscar algunos casos de personas con problemas por el uso de cyanoacrylates para «curar» heridas en sus casas, y encontré el caso de de una paciente femenina de 39 años de edad, la cual utilizó super glue como tratamiento para la resequedad de la piel de sus dedos, el cual le causó una necrosis de la piel anterior del pulgar, por la histotoxicidad producidad por el formaldehyde. Esta señora requirió de un injerto de piel para corregir el defecto.
También encontré otro estudio en el que se concluye que la liberación de sustancias nocivas luego de la utilización de cyanoacrylate para reparar dentaduras puede durar hasta 2 semanas.
Para no aburrirles más, concluyo con lo siguiente:
La utilización de Coqui para tratar ampollas abiertas es una práctica que no parece tener consecuencias graves a largo plazo, por la dosis mínima de pegamento utilizado, pero la cual podría producir daño local de la piel por quemadura o histotoxicidad. Para su uso, los beneficios claramente deben superar los riesgos. Si está pensando hacer uso de un cyanoacrylate con este objetivo, recomendamos que utilice Dermabond, una alternativa saludable y con semejantes resultados.
¿Lo haría de nuevo? Si es necesario, lo haría.
